In 2012, a Japanese college student driving in Australia was using the car navigation system to travel to North Stradbroke Island. Unfortunately, the student followed the computer system a little too closely and when choosing the shortest route to the island, his car was got stuck in the sand at low tide and was later submerged in the water!

The student and his car was saved from further trouble by local rescue personnel who were shocked to hear of the reason for this predicament!

“I asked the car navigation system for the most direct way to the island and it provided this route.”

The regular distance using the above highway to North Stradbroke Island is about 15 kilometers by car. There is a more direct route to the island but it is ferry service for both passengers and cars. It seems that the Japanese student thought that the ferry route was an alternative route to drive his car! The student needed to be more careful and his miscue created a huge problem for local authorities and residents.

The car was severely damaged and the student returned to Japan soon after but expressed his hope that he would be able to return to Australia in the future.

A strange but true story which captured a lot of media and online viewer attention worldwide!
