Here are the ruins of buildings of the abandoned community of Sakae located on Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. This island had been known as “Gunkanjima” (Warship Island) as the silhouette of the island from the ocean looks a battleship! This island had been inhabited since the Meiji Era but was finally abandoned in 2009. This site has been tentatively registered with World Heritage Sites and recently there has been interest in arranging tours of abandoned places in Japan. Here is a map with the location of Hashima Island.

The last people left Hashima Island in 2009 but official tours are not currently allowed due to the unstable condition of the buildings on most of the island.

▼ As of April 2009, only the areas marked in red are currently allowed to engage in tours.
