This program was implemented in cooperation with local volunteer groups.

“Robert W. Coleman Elementary School” is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States. With the cooperation of the local nonprofit organization called “The Holistic Life Foundation”, it is urging students to meditate instead of imposing a punishment or penalties for problem behavior at school.

The Holistic Life Foundation believes that punishment isn’t necessary for children’s discipline and it is important to calm down and to relieve anxiety and stress at the source of the problem behavior by using meditation.

It is a very positive development if students can meditate to improve their state of mind and decreasing problem behavior episodes at school.

“Meditation room” is prepared.

The offending student will go to the “meditation room” with a special mat and remain in the room meditating until the student regains concentration and a relaxed mind before returning to class.

Initially, there were some doubts that small children could learn meditation but the initiative has been successful with a dramatic decrease in problem behavior as well as contributing to the improvement of the attendance rate and the concentration ability of students in class.

I hope that this program is adopted by more schools in the future!
