This horse:
depicted in this painting was named “Veil” and not “Marengo” (The name comes from the Battle of Marengo) as many people believe. This horse was a pure blood Arabian horse of only 142 centimeters in height which appeared to match the short and stocky body type of Napoleon. This painting was a romantic and inspiring image of Napoleon and was probably not realistic at all based on the exotic clothing or dramatic pose of the horse!

Here is a photo of the horse named “Veil” taken on June 27th at the military museum in the Hôtel des Zambari in Paris in a state of restoration. People were quite surprised by just how small the last horse of Napoleon actually was!

It seems that the image of Napoleon has been romanticized by history and this restoration really stirred up a lot of emotions of the man and the legend!
