Infectious diseases remain a big problem in shantytowns and low income communities in South Africa. Poor sanitation, lack of clean water for drinking creates a myriad of medical problems such as diarrhea, pneumonia and other maladies such as cholera that still kill a lot of people every year. However, many of these infectious conditions are preventable if “people have the opportunity to wash their hands with soap” So, “(Hope Soap)” was born and it has been successful in reducing infection by almost 70% in these communities.
Hope Soap.
So, what kind of soap do you use?
Hope soap has a small toy located inside the bar of soap such as “Hello Kitty” shown above. This helps to motivate young children to regular wash so they can ultimately get the toy.
Children love toys and are very happy washing their hands for a free toy!
A free “Hello Kitty” toy was finally obtained after using all of the soap bar for clean hands.
Good hygiene by children at a young age creates good habits when they become adults.
“Hope Soap” is distributed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Infectious diseases remain a serious problem in developing countries and children face the biggest risk so I think that this program is a very effective way to help people develop better hygiene and healthier lives. Plus, children enjoy it!
