fd150325w001Here is a photo of a very cute animal (and endangered species) that appears to be a combination of a rabbit and a mouse. It is called a Pika and it was photographed for the first time in almost 20 years.

A photographer and researcher named Lee Weidon captured the rare animal in the Tianshin Mountains near the border between China and Kyrgzistan at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters.

The Pika is only 20 centimeters long and its small size appears to be evolution to protect itself against predators in its mountainous habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) designated the Pika as an endangered species in 2008 though it is not currently protected by the Chinese government. Lee’s photographs could be important evidence to protect this unique animal going forward.
