The world’s oldest water was discovered in Canada recently and is estimated to be nearly 2 billion years old! This amazing discovery is expected to provide important clues to learn about the earth’s conditions at that time!

Discovered at the bottom of a famous mine.

This 2-billion-year old water was discovered at the bottom of a famous gold mine near the city of Timmins Ontario, Canada by a team of geologists from the University of Toronto.

The tunnels of the mine have spread directly under the town and in recent years there have been a number of incidents when one of these tunnels have collapsed leaving huge holes of earth at ground level.

Clues of the Earth from 2 billion years ago?

Dr. Oliver Waugh who was a member of the research team said various gaseous substances were identified in the water such as helium, argon, neon, krypton and xenon.

It is said that these gases had accumulated over time in the water within the rifts of the rock and by calculating the volume of each gas, a determination on the age of the water could be estimated.

In addition, the salt concentration was said to be about 8 times higher than the seawater and contains trace amounts of metal so it would unpalatable as drinking water!

Research on this water is still being conducted so it is unclear just what secrets about life on earth over 2 billion years ago was like.

It is simply amazing to discover the existence of water from 2 billion years ago and I hope that more spectacular discoveries will be uncovered about the secrets of life on earth from long ago.
