Muharrem is a young man with a hearing disability who lives in Instanbul, Turkey. He uses sign language to communicate with others but most people do not know sign language. It left him feeling isolated and very lonely at times.
So, Samsung Electronics helped organize a project which would teach ordinary people sign language along with some other initiatives to break down those communication barriers faced by people with hearing disabilities in society.
The secret program initiative took almost one month to plan and prepare and enlisted the help of Muharrem’s sister.
People involved in the initiative actively took part in sign language classes.
Then on the fateful day of December 28, 2014, the initiative was launched. Everyone in the town started to greet the young man with “Good Morning” in sign language and the experience left him feeling a little confused and puzzled!
Everyone that he met spoke to him in sign language!
At the Samsung office, there was a new monitor installed of a call center employee greeting him in sign language!
Here is a comment from Samsung about this special project.
Samsung has managed to create a little bit of surprise in this community. It is Samsung’s dream to eliminate the barriers of the world! We are also working on a video call center for the hearing impaired so that they can communicate more freely and become more active and included members of our community!
This wonderful day brought tears of joy to this man’s eyes.
