How is that possible?

An illusion that looks red even though it’s not there!

There looks to be some “red pixels”in this photograph, don’t you think?

This original tweet was posted by Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka who teaches and does research on the subject of optical illusions at Ritsumeikan University in Japan. This image displays a process called “color homeostasis”.

What is “color homeostasis”?

“Color homeostasis” is a phenomenon in which the same object is perceived as having a color (that actually doesn’t exist in the image) when placed under an illuminated light even if the condition of the illumination light changes. For example, a red apple will look red when looking under a blue light. Color homeostasis is a type of perception constancy and there are other homeostasis of size, shape, and brightness”.
